WISE’S TAVERN BUILDING
Where History Lives On
Wise’s Tavern is located on the northeast corner of Fairfax and Cameron Streets, directly across from Alexandria City Hall in Alexandria.
Originally established as a colonial tavern, Wise’s Tavern hosted many prominent historical figures, including George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. It is also famously known as the place where George Washington was first addressed as “Mr. President” when he stopped for a drink at his favorite tavern while traveling from Mount Vernon to his inauguration.
In the early 1980s, Wise’s Tavern was purchased by Frank and Eva Manning and thoughtfully repurposed into commercial offices and suites. Today, the building remains owned and operated by the Manning family and continues to stand as a site of enduring historical significance.
